While I don’t believe there are rules to building a killer outfit for each occasion, I do believe that keeping a few simple principles in mind may help ease the occasionally stressful moments that come with finding something appropriate to wear for each occasion.  If you find that you have a difficult time putting together the right pieces to encompass an outfit, then try this simple tried and true method.

1) Know Your Audience – This is the most important thing to consider when getting dressed.  Not only is it important to keep in mind those you’ll be interacting with, this also refers to the environment you’ll be in, the occasion and what you’ll be doing.  It would be inappropriate and down right uncomfortable to wear a pair of 5-inch Manolos to hang out with friends at an amusement park.  Likewise, Reebok’s and booty shorts are a no go for a sit down affair.

2) Begin With The Basics – Now that you know where you’ll be, who you’ll be with and what you’ll be doing, it’s time to put the ensemble together.  The simplest way to begin is with a base from which to build your outfit around.  Be it your favorite dark rinse jeans paired with a basic top, simple dress or classic pair of heels, these items may not be the focal point of the outfit but they are the base upon which you’ll build your outfit.  Think of this as the base coat underneath your nail color and top coat.  Next, you’ll…

3) Add A Statement Piece –  An interesting necklace, an eye-popping clutch or those killer over the knee boots (OTK) you’ve been dying to wear.  This will be the focal point of the ensemble.  If your statement piece is your base (an embellished top, feather skirt, bold print dress), then allow these accessories to be more muted yet compliment and elevate the statement piece.

4) Speaking of Compliments –  Complete the look with complimentary layers if necessary.  This is most applicable during the colder seasons but the addition of outerwear such as a classic trench or a blazer can pull together any outfit in any season.  Keep in mind that these items can be statement pieces as well as exemplified here.

5) Edit, Edit, Edit –  And finally, it’s important to edit the ensemble.  I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Coco Chanel quote: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”  Well, has Coco Chanel ever lead you astray?

Again, although there are no rules for dressing per se, keeping these simple tips in mind can help you create a great ensemble for any occasion while still representing your personal sense of style.
