As of late, I’ve had to dust off my winter accessories, line up my favorite gloves and search for new additions such as statement scarves and sturdy yet chic boots to help me through the next few months of winter as the worst part of the season, bitter winds and icy roads, has officially begun.  Since a winter coat is essential for comfortably conquering the winter season, I decided to share a few things I consider when selecting a winter coat.

Length: There are a number of options when it comes to choosing the length of a winter coat. From cal-length (these cover the body down to the calf) and knee-length (typically extend just above or below the knee) to mid-thigh and hip-length, there are several options to choose from.  I prefer mid-length coats that extend just blow my finger tips.  These are the most flattering and comfortable for my petite frame (yup, I’m a little shrimp, all 5’1.5 of me).

Fit: If you’re a petite woman like me, you’ve come to learn the importance of fit when making a clothing purchase.  This is particularly important when purchasing a winter coat.  The coat must be snug enough to keep me warm on windy days but loose enough to allow for additional layers, such as a cable knit sweater, underneath.

Hint: Since the coat itself is quite voluminous, bulky layers underneath with clearly show so stick to simple, light layers.

Style:  Classic vs patterned, belted or not, the style of the coat is entirely dependent on one’s personal style.  I prefer belted wool coats that allow for a shapely torso.  I also tend to lean towards monochromatic, classic colors such as a camel trench wool coat or solid black parka.  This allow for much versatility in terms of occasional wear yet there are many options when selecting the color and style of your coat.  Choose what you love!
